Monopodial epiphytes. Stem short to elongated. Leaves few to many, distichous, sheathing at the base, glabrous, deciduous, duplicate. Inflorescence lateral, a short many-flowered, often very dense raceme. Flowers rather small, resupinate or not. Sepals free. Petals free, similar to the sepals. Lip divided into a deeply cup-shaped basal part and a semicircular or triangular apical part, not mobile. Column-foot absent. Pollinia 2, with a short slit, or rarely 4, solid, caudicles absent, stipe present, viscidium present.

Distribution
Sri Lanka, tropical continental Asia, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines; about 46 species.

Distribution in the Philippines
Luzon (Baguio, Benguet); 1 species [Gastrochilus calceolaris (Buch.-Ham ex Sm.) D.Don ].

Habitat
Epiphytes, mainly in montane forest, much less frequent in the lowlands.

Notes
An easily recognised genus by the cup-shaped base of the lip. Species of Gastrochilus can be found in many amateur collections.
